1 La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Matte Face Moisturizer
Our top pick

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Matte Face Moisturizer

8.6/10 Our score

Best for Oily or combination skin that wants a matte finish and can skip a rich cream.

A light, oil-free moisturizer for oily and combination skin. It goes on shiny and dries down matte. Wirecutter's 2026 wear test named it the oily-skin pick: 16 ingredients, ceramides and hyaluronic acid for water, niacinamide, and silica plus corn starch to take the shine off. Dr. Marisa Garshick, in a SELF guide, points to the same niacinamide and ceramide mix for acne-prone skin that still needs a barrier cream. The brand says the barrier is repaired after an hour. That figure is theirs. A HuffPost quote from Dr. Azadeh Shirazi mentions a micro-exfoliating acid. The ingredient list on the La Roche-Posay page does not show one. It shows silica, corn starch, and perlite. Skip it if your skin is dry. The regular Toleriane cream is the one on the face-moisturizer page, and it is a different formula.

2 CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel

CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel

8.4/10 Our score

Best for Oily or sensitive skin that wants a fragrance-free gel and does not need a matte powder finish.

A clear, oil-free gel with three ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and dimethicone. It is fragrance-free. In SELF's oily-skin guide, Dr. Marisa Garshick calls out the ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and oil-absorbing silica, and the lack of fragrance. NBC Select's June 2026 gel guide quotes Dr. David Li on a fragrance-free ceramide gel with dimethicone that he used when his own skin was oilier. He says the silicone is what makes a light gel still feel hydrating. The brand says it suits every skin type, including dry. It will not replace a petrolatum cream in winter. Sunscreen is a separate step.

3 CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion

CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion

8.2/10 Our score

Best for Normal, oily, or barrier-damaged skin that wants a light night lotion with niacinamide.

An oil-free night lotion, not a treatment. Niacinamide is the fourth ingredient, after water, glycerin, and caprylic triglyceride. CeraVe does not print a percentage on the current US page. The same list has ceramides NP, AP, and EOP, cholesterol, and hyaluronic acid. It is fragrance-free and marked non-comedogenic. Dermatologist Dr. Schwarz, writing on Dermapedia, says it pulls water in and replaces barrier fats, and that nothing very occlusive sits on top, so very dry skin wants a richer cream over it. He also notes the letters PM do not mean it exfoliates: a breakout on this lotion is irritation, not purging. Use it at night if the CeraVe tub feels heavy. It has no sunscreen.

4 Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Water Gel

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Water Gel

8/10 Our score

Best for Oily skin that can tolerate fragrance and wants the lightest daytime gel.

The light blue water gel in the Hydro Boost line, and the one dermatologists mean when they say Hydro Boost for oily skin. Dr. Michele Farber, in Prevention, calls it a lightweight gel for oily or acne-prone skin. Dr. Debra Jaliman, in the same piece, says the hyaluronic acid hydrates without blocking pores. Dr. Azadeh Shirazi told HuffPost it suits hot, humid weather and does not feel greasy. Dr. Schwarz, on Dermapedia, agrees it fits oily and normal skin, then checks the formula. Hyaluronic acid sits far down the list. Dimethicone, a silicone, sits near the top and does the sealing. The jar has fragrance and a blue dye. Some people report a tacky feel or stinging as it settles. It is too light for dry skin. The fragrance-free gel-cream is a different, slightly richer product.

5 Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream

7.8/10 Our score

Best for Combination or oily skin that shines under a rich cream.

The fragrance-free gel-cream in the Hydro Boost line, for skin that shines under a rich cream. Neutrogena lists hyaluronic acid plus amino acids and says this version is dye-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic. Its 48-hour hydration line compares the cream with untreated skin, not with other creams. Wirecutter's seasonal moisturizer advice names the Hydro Boost Gel Cream as a good middle step for normal or combination skin, because gel creams carry more softening oils than a true gel. Its main moisturizer guide picks the Hydro Boost Water Gel, a different product, for normal skin, and testers found this gel-cream absorbed on oily T-zones. Prevention's dermatologists also recommend Hydro Boost for oily skin, and those quotes describe the water gel. This one is the unscented jar. It will not replace a petrolatum cream in a dry winter.

6 Cetaphil Gentle Clear Mattifying Acne Moisturizer

Cetaphil Gentle Clear Mattifying Acne Moisturizer

7.6/10 Our score

Best for Acne-prone oily skin that wants a matte lotion with salicylic acid, and is not already using another leave-on acid.

A light lotion with 0.5 percent salicylic acid, niacinamide, and zinc gluconate, sold for acne-prone sensitive skin. Dr. Marisa Garshick told SELF it does not leave skin looking or feeling greasy, and a later SELF acne guide quotes her on the matte finish. Dr. Dufner, in that same guide, points to the salicylic acid for clearing pores. The guide also lists a limit: this bottle is not oil-free. The brand's 48-hour hydration line is its own claim. Skip it if you already use a retinoid, benzoyl peroxide, or another acid every night. Stacking exfoliants is how oily skin ends up flaky and more shiny.

7 Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Lotion

Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Lotion

7.4/10 Our score

Best for Combination skin that wants a plain, fragrance-free face lotion and finds CeraVe too heavy.

A light face lotion for combination skin, sold in a 3 fl oz bottle with no added fragrance. The ingredient list is glycerin, hydroxyethyl urea, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, and a silicone-and-oil base, without the ceramides in CeraVe. U.S. News's 2026 dermatologist survey ranks Cetaphil second among face-moisturizer brands, and the sample product on that list uses this same dicaprylyl carbonate and hydroxyethyl urea base. It is the lotion to pick if the Cetaphil cream feels greasy. It will not replace a ceramide cream on eczema-prone skin.

8 CeraVe Oil Control Moisturizing Gel-Cream

CeraVe Oil Control Moisturizing Gel-Cream

7.2/10 Our score

Best for Combination or oily skin that wants a fragrance-free gel-cream aimed at shine, and can accept that the long shine test is an editor's, not a lab's.

A fragrance-free gel-cream sold for combination to oily skin. CeraVe puts ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and silica in it, and says the silica is there to take up oil. Dr. Kunal Malik's quote about a matte finish through the day is printed on CeraVe's own page. An ELLE UK editor used it for a couple of months, including under makeup on office days, and wrote that midday shine on the T-zone eased. Dr. Phillips, quoted in that piece, credits silica for the immediate matte look and niacinamide for sebum. There is no instrument test here of the sort Good Housekeeping ran on other creams. The brand's line about pores looking smaller over time is the brand's. It will not replace a petrolatum cream if the skin is dry.

9 belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb

belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb

7/10 Our score

Best for Oily or combination skin that wants a cooling gel-cream and does not mind a light scent.

A light gel-cream built around hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, panthenol, and squalane. Dr. Hee Jin Kim, in an Allure oily-skin guide, says it hydrates without heaviness and absorbs with a fresh finish. A Forbes maskne piece points oily and acne-prone skin toward a gel and names this one. A SELF editor who usually avoids fragrance still liked a light lemon scent on an earlier jar. Allure's product card marks a version fragrance-free. Read the jar you buy. There is no wear-lab number for shine. Skip it if fragrance is the reason you left the Neutrogena water gel.

10 Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer

Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer

6.8/10 Our score

Best for Oily skin that has been over-stripped and now stings, not skin that only wants less shine.

A fragrance-free oat gel with feverfew, sold for sensitive skin. Dr. Azadeh Shirazi told HuffPost it suits people who got irritated while trying to dry their oil out. Dr. Schwarz, on Dermapedia, calls the gel an okay fit for oily skin and says it will not reduce oil production. In Vogue, Dr. Humphrey places the same gel with dry, sensitive, and eczema-prone skin. The brand's 48-hour moisture line comes from its own small study. Use it when the barrier is angry. Use the matte Toleriane or the CeraVe oil-control gel-cream when the only problem is shine.

Oily skin still needs a moisturizer, and a gel or a light lotion is the one that does not sit there and shine. La Roche-Posay's matte Toleriane is the wear-test pick. CeraVe's ultra-light gel is the fragrance-free everyday gel. Neutrogena's water gel is the one dermatologists name, and the standard jar is scented. A rich cream is the wrong texture. Dry or sensitive skin that wants that cream should use the face moisturizer ranking at https://top10products.pro/p/face-moisturizers. Sunscreen is a separate step. Star ratings and the pros and cons on each card are aggregated from opinions published on the internet.

How we picked these

Wirecutter's 2026 wear test and dermatologist quotes from SELF, Prevention, and NBC Select decide the order. A brand's hour-count stays labeled as theirs. A quote about one Hydro Boost jar is not applied to the other. How many people bought a gel is not a reason to rank it higher.
